What hexadecimal to octal means
Converting hexadecimal to octal rewrites the same integer using a different digit alphabet and place-value system.
The absolute value does not change — only the representation does. Hexadecimal uses base-16 (0–9, A–F); Octal uses base-8 (0–7). This page treats the whole input as one number (whitespace is ignored), which matches how engineers usually convert machine values between bases.

How to convert hexadecimal to octal

Confirm every character is legal in base-16 (0–9, A–F). Optional whitespace is stripped before parsing so you can paste spaced nibbles or bytes.

Convert to an absolute value
Each digit is multiplied by 16 raised to its position, counting from the right starting at power 0. Summing those terms yields the same integer you would write in decimal.

Express the value in base-8
Repeatedly divide by 8 and collect remainders, or mentally group bits when moving between binary, octal, and hex. The remainders become the octal digits (0–7).

Preserve the sign if present
A leading minus sign is kept through the conversion. The magnitude is converted, then the sign is reattached to the result.

Take the hexadecimal sample 48 69. Walking through the conversion:
- Digits: 4 8 6 9 (base-16)
- Place values: 4×16^3 + 8×16^2 + 6×16^1 + 9×16^0 = 18537 (decimal)

base-16Hexadecimal
Hexadecimal is base-16, using digits 0–9 and letters A–F. Each hex digit maps to four binary digits (a nibble).
Two hex digits represent one byte, which is why hex is common for memory addresses, color codes (#RRGGBB), hashes, and debugging dumps. Case is usually ignored when reading values.

base-8Octal
Octal is base-8, using digits 0–7. Each octal digit represents exactly three binary digits.
Octal was historically popular on systems with word sizes divisible by three, and still shows up in Unix file permissions (for example 755). Groups of three bits map cleanly to one octal digit.
